Building the platforms behind federal-scale applications.

For the past ten years I have worked first as a solution and then as a system architect at the Swiss Federal Office of Information Technology, Systems and Telecommunication (BIT) — building applications together with customers, and then the platforms they run on. My background combines a rich body of architecture work with hands-on software development and academic research in applied computer science, along with international speaking experience, team leadership and practical teaching skills.

Professional Experience

2004 → now

Responsible for the realization of various applications for different federal offices. One of the most prominent examples is the Swiss Covid and Covid Certificate App — a detailed overview is available in my Cloud Native Day 2022 talk.

As a system architect I manage the architectural decisions for 16 teams, ranging from storage and compute teams to DWH and AI service teams. These decisions include guidelines on how platforms are built and how specific services integrate into the BIT data center infrastructure — including a VMware vSphere VM Cloud, a Kubernetes / Cloud Foundry based Container Cloud and an Oracle DB platform.

FastID · Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) Led a five-person team developing a rich client for the first-time registration of refugees arriving in Germany. Responsibilities covered design, requirements engineering and programming. Technologies included C# WPF (MVVM), web services, Oracle Enterprise Bus and SQLite 3, with SCRUM as the project management framework (JIRA tool support).

A2LL · Federal Employment Agency (BA) Design and requirements engineering for a highly available web-based payment management system (ALG2) with around 30,000 concurrent daily users. Main technologies: Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic and IBM Informix 12. Additionally responsible for data analysis regarding performance and volume of an archiving solution (> 200 TB, > 2 billion XML and PDF/A documents) using R. ITIL served as the project framework; total team size > 200.

Led the redesign and reimplementation of the EBKON product line for mobile devices and managed the development and release of a cross-platform mobile web application for the German market. Development used ASP/ADO.NET in C#, HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3 and MS SQL Server Business Intelligence Services, with SCRUM as project framework. EBKON GmbH was acquired by Fidentia GmbH in 2013.

JSPS Scholar at the C&C Innovation Initiative laboratory. Led a small research team (3 members) investigating the relationship between location-based emotion statements and trust, using a web-based mobile game.
